Auto-Immune Inner Ear Deficiency (Immune Hearing Loss)
is hearing loss resulting from the auto-immune system attacking our
ears. The following is a list of symptoms, causes, and treatment
for AIED. Symptoms The three most common symptoms of AIED are rapidly progressive hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and a feeling of fullness in the ears. A less common symptom is dizziness. Causes AIED is most often associated with other auto-immuune disorders such as hypothyroidism and lupus rheumatoid arthritis. AIED is prevalent in middle-aged females. Treatment Prompt treatment and evaluation is critical in recovering hearing or stabilizing hearing loss in AIED cases. The most common treatment is the use of steroids taken either orally, by injection or perfusion. Steroid treatment is effective in the majority of cases.
